Know Thine Enemy

Hail, Bannermen. It’s time to check out another unit for the A Song of Ice and Fire: Tabletop Miniatures Game that’s on the horizon. And, honestly, they’re probably watching us just as closely as we’re watching them. They’re the Crownland Scouts, a new cavalry unit for House Baratheon. Let’s get out our spyglass and check out the unit’s stats so we know what we’re dealing with.

Starting off, the Crownland Scouts are available to use by both Stannis and Renly players. So, no worries about one brother getting something without the other one also getting some. The unit comes in at 6 points to field, which isn’t too bad for a cavalry unit. But what kind of horsepower do these troops have?

As with all cavalry, the unit has 3 wounds per model as well as getting to make a free Maneuver at the start of their activation. This means their Speed of 5 is basically doubled on the battlefield. They’re competent with their longswords, rolling 7 dice at full ranks and hitting on 4+. Defensively, they’re rather lightly armored (for a Baratheon unit, anyway) with a 4+ Defense Save and a morale of 6+. They’re not likely to break and run from most fights.

The unit has access to two orders. One can be used at the start of a friendly turn and targets an enemy within line of sight and long range. That enemy becomes Vulnerable. Rather straightforward. The other Order can be used at the start of an enemy turn. It allows a friendly unit within short range to shift 3”. These troops really can have an effect on the battlefield with their mere presence alone, making enemies vulnerable at just the right time or shifting a friendly unit suddenly out of range of an enemy attack. And since House Baratheon aren’t usually speedsters on the battlefield, an extra 3” shift can really mean a lot.

And that’s what we have for you this time. Stay tuned for more scouting reports of upcoming A Song of Ice and Fire: Tabletop Miniatures Game releases. And be sure to head down to your FLGS and make sure they’ve got some Crownland Scouts on order.

Until next time, Bannermen.
